Students reviewed the skill of using a number line to add numbers with sums up to 10. They partnered up, rolled two dice, and challenged their partner to show the addition of those two numbers by making jumps on a number line. Ask your child to show you this method using a ruler or measuring tape!

Mad science!
Today the students were able to put their mad scientist goggles on and get messy! They used containers with the 3 primary colours and eyedroppers and experimented with mixing. We had fun, but we sure got messy!
After we read Mix It Up to confirm our findings!
Ask your child about a colour they made by mixing other colours.

Scholastic Update
Hope there was no inconvenience, and I am still collecting orders for books until Friday!
Twonies for Terry and our fire drill
Today we practiced our first fire drill. We will have about 6 throughout the year. The students did pretty well! Please review with your child; 'Safe, Silent and Serious'.
We also started to talk about Terry Fox in preparation for our Terry Fox run and fundraiser on Friday. If you would like to contribute, please bring a twonie!
One of the students made a lovely comment when she said, "Terry Fox was brave so during a fire drill we should be brave too."

Leaf Man!
Today our class joined up with Ms. Bakkan's class for a nature walk. While on our walk, we collected as many different leaves as we could find; we found leaves of different shapes, sizes and colours! We even saw a rabbit on our walk.
When we returned to class with our collection of leaves, we used our magnifying glasses to inspect the leaves and all their little details.
After we did some investigating, we listened to the story Leaf Man by Lois Elhert. We then chose leaves to make our very own leaf man, like the one from the story.
We had a lot of fun with this project and we were able to incorporate science, inquiry, literacy and art! Ask me about my Leaf Man.

Fall Colours in Science and Math
Students continued with their science unit on The Seasons and Colours. We started by discussing the changes we noticed in nature. Some of the leaves are turning orange, brown, purple, yellow and brown! This inspired some science art. We started with a guided drawing of a leaf. Then the students used their knowledge of patterns to add details in each section of the leaf. Then they coloured with oil pastels in Fall Colours. Tomorrow we will add a 'wet wash' of water colour paint and lots of water. Stay tuned for the final product!
It's ok to be Different!
We read the story It's Ok to be Different by Todd Parr. After we talked about acceptance and what it means. We also discussed some ways that we are different from others! Here are some of the examples of our art that was inspired by this story!

Mental math!
Today the students used a variety of hands-on materials, technology (smartboards) and visual and verbal prompts to practice their mental math skills. They started with a 10 frame mat and some counters. They then showed a variety of numbers using their manipulatives by following some written and verbal prompts. Some even made connections to our patterns unit by creating an AB pattern with their counters. Ask your child if they can show you "one less" or "two more" of a chosen number! Get them to use their mental math skills!

LMNO Peas!
After we read the story we brainstormed some activities that started with the same letter as the first letter of each of our names. Each student used water colours to paint the first letter of their name. Then they used their best bubblegum and book writing to write down 3 activities that started with the same letter.
Finally, the students added their peas! They used a sharpie marker to draw a face and add legs and arms to portray their peas doing different activities. What were your child's peas doing?
Thanks to Ms. Bakkan for this amazing project idea!

Team Work!
We also started integrating our science unit on Colours into our writing unit. The students have learned about two of the primary colours; Red and Yellow. We continued to use our best sky, grass and dirt letter formation and our knowledge of letter sounds to write some things in our journal that are red and yellow. Ask your child if they can name a primary colour!
