Puppet Plays

Today we finally got to start making our puppets for our Reader's Theatre that we have been practicing! The students were split into groups and each given a character in a play. They have been practicing reading their lines and today got to use a variety of materials to plan and build each character and props for the play; using details from the story. We will continue to practice our lines using our puppets and our special puppet theatre that was built by Mr. Carstairs and painted by me! We will let you know closer to 'performance' times!

Our Week!

Today we were very lucky to have a performance by HOJA, the acapella group! They did some amazing songs using only their voices and no instruments. They even got Mr. Dyck up onstage dancing and singing with them. And, yes, they also picked on ME by singing a song to me!

We continued our day with some writing about our long weekends and learning some new word families.

For science we learned about living and non-living things and were excited to see that our lima beans that we planted last week have sprouted roots and some have even broken the soil and started to grow leaves! We will continue to observe and make hypotheses about our plants over the next couple of weeks.

Tomorrow, Wednesday the 24th is fun lunch. This Friday, May 26th is Movie night. We will be showing the new Beauty and the Beast! A donation of $10 per family is suggested.

Have a wonderful week!

Pictures of MOM!

For a project for the upcoming assembly, we are asking that the grade 1 students please bring in a picture of mom to use in a slideshow video about Mother's Day. Please note that this will be seen by the school at an assembly so if you are ok with your picture being seen, please send one with your student as soon as possible this week.

Building Cars!

The grade 1s had a fun challenge yesterday and today. They were asked to build a car using life savers, straws, paper and tape. Could they make a car that would travel at least two meters down a ramp? What about one powered only by wind?

Here is a video of one of our winning teams:

Great Team work you two!

Steve Harmer and Hat Day!

Here are some pictures from the fabulous motivational magic show; Brilliant and Resilient! Steve Harmer had many words of encouragement. Ask your child to name one of the seven Cs!

Hat day was also a success! Thanks to everyone who participated in raising awareness for mental health!

HAT DAY is May 3

Our Week at a Glance!

Thank goodness the sun has finally come outs for us this week! We will be sure to take advantage of it and do some of our learning outside in the fresh air when possible:)

Today the students wrapped up their beaver research by reading through books and other sources of information to find interesting facts about this large rodent. Tomorrow we will begin to compile our information on its diet, appearance, habitat and interesting facts to create a class book. The students have learned a lot; ask your child to share an interesting fact about Canada's favourite animal.

We even have our very own Beaver Mascots in both classrooms that the students can have sit on their desk when they are working particularly hard, or when the students want to practice their letter writing by sending letters to our little friends. We voted and learned how to complete a bar graph in order to decide on the best names for our mascots. The boy is Beavie and the girl is Cutesie! They have been a wonderful addition to the learning environment:)

This afternoon we have Steven Harmer here to do a special magic show for all the students and staff at Ken Taylor school! Ask your child what the best part of the show was.

Wednesday is HAT DAY for Mental Health Awareness! Students may wear any hat to school to support mental health awareness.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week and enjoys this wonderful weather!

Ms. C
